“How many times have I asked you to wrap it up and—”

“How many times do I have to tell you that I did? She’s lying, Derek!”

“The video doesn’t lie, Ezra. It’s grainy, but any good computer tech can clean this up and see that it’s you. And even if they don’t54, they tell a story that the media and tabloids want to hear. You’ve always been the good, bad boy of golf. You have a helluva game, and you’re a single, highly unattainable bachelor who comes from a wealthy and influential family. Your reputation has always been squeaky clean even when they’ve tried to tie you to your eldest brother’s unpardonable sins.”

I scrub my hand down my face, jerk my hat off my head, and toss it on the floor.

“Damnit! What do you want me to do?”

“Be more selective about the people you surround yourself with. You know as well as I do that these groupies want nothing more than to marry rich. They want someone to take care of them and support the lifestyle they aspire to. You’re a road map to that, Ezra. They don’t give a shit about you, your goals, your reputation, or your career.”

“You don’t think that I know that?”

“Well, you’re not making it easy on yourself, buddy, by fooling around with them. If you’re looking for someone to have discrete sex with, I’ve given you the card for a reputable agency that—”

“My God!” I growl, standing up and pressing my hands on top of my head as I pace the room.

“That’s about the only one who can help you if you won’t take my advice. You’ve played around with fire, and now you’re about to get burned. You keep sleeping with these girls and—”

“There were just two, Derek, not multiple. Two groupies, and Tara’s been the only one for the last year and a half.”

“Either way, you’ve pissed her off, and now she’s blackmailing you.”

“She’s not blackmailing me. She’s just telling me what this girl is saying. They’re lies, and I don’t give a shit about it.”

“Well, you’d better! Do you realize how much you stand to lose in sponsorships? Nike! Titleist! TaylorMade! NetJets! Veritex! You stand to lose ten million dollars in your sponsorships alone, Ezra!”

“Look, these girls lie all the time, and everyone knows that. It’s not like I’m married. Besides, she worked in that bar. They’d be in as much trouble as I am for allowing a minor to work in that establishment. It’s easy to prove that I didn’t know. What do you expect to happen, Derek?”

“She’s underaged, Ezra. She was at the time, and she still is. She’ll be eighteen before the baby arrives, but it was conceived prior to that.”

“It’s not mine!”

“Even if it’s not, we’re talking about your reputation, Ezra. The fact that I need to tell you this is a problem because I know that you know. You’re not some rookie player that’s new to this game. You’ve worked your ass off for years to establish your reputation along with your skills and expertise.
